Lake Forest Symphony Remembers Rhett Butler
The Lake Forest Symphony is mourning the death of Rhett Butler, a member of the Lake Forest Symphony Board of Directors, who passed away on November 22, 2017.
Rhett Butler was born in the Chicago area in 1940. After moving to Lake Forest in 1978, Butler joined the city's plan commission in 1986, then became a member of the City Council in 1991 as Third Ward Alderman, culminating with his election as mayor in 1993.
While serving as Mayor from 1993-96, Butler was credited with overseeing the creation of the city's first strategic plan, the initial comprehensive park plan and having city council meetings broadcast on cable television, according to the city. Other accomplishments noted during his tenure was a renovation of City Hall and leading a drive for voters to pass a $5.6 million bond referendum for infrastructure improvements.
Mr. Butler's passion for serving the community was unparalleled and his contributions to Lake Forest significant. He has been a cherished member of the Lake Forest Symphony family and will be missed.
