The Lake Forest Symphony is delighted to continue our programming series in downtown Lake Forest for the 2017-2018 season. The Symphony will host three “salon” events, in which patrons are treated to an intimate evening of performance and conversation with LFS musicians.

A YOUNG PEOPLE'S CONCERT

Saturday, OCTOBER 8, 2016 – 1 pm

GORTON COMMUNITY CENTER | JOHN & NANCY HUGHES THEATER
 

Compose Yourself! is a fun, interactive forty-five minute program designed to introduce children of all ages to the instruments of the symphony orchestra. Participants will be provided with an opportunity to see how classical music is composed using three elements of music: melody, harmony, and rhythm. The children will hear fifteen different classical instruments and learn how they blend together to create the sound of the full orchestra. The program features members of the Lake Forest Symphony and is designed by Composer-in-Residence James Stephenson.

Suitable for children of all ages and families.

Music Director Vladimir Kulenovic hosts the Lake Forest Symphony’s inaugural Salon Series
event, an intimate evening with special guest Mike Zafirovski, executive advisor to one of the
world’s largest investment firms, The Blackstone Group. The two discuss the Maestro’s father
the composer, as well as their shared European heritage and immigration to the United States.
Enjoy a sampling of Serbian refreshments, lively conversation, and a selection of music curated by the Maestro himself.

Concertmaster Netanel Draiblate hosts an evening of violin music and history with Polish violin maker Lukas Wronski. Mr. Draiblate recounts coming to the United States from Israel and how he came to meet Lukas Wronski, who built his violin modeled after Paganini’s “Il Cannone,” in 2007. The two discuss French and Italian violin making traditions in comparison to that of modern makers, and Mr. Draiblate performs solo offerings on violin.

Crumpet the Trumpet tells the humorous, sweet story of Crumpet, a baby trumpet that just can’t get to sleep. Crumpet’s mom invites all her musical instrument friends to help, but nothing seems to work. Join us for this multimedia program, lavishly illustrated in vivid yet serene colors, that gently introduces children to the power and magic of classical music. LYON LEIFER

ADVENTURES IN INDIA

Lake Forest Symphony Principal Flutist Lyon Leifer recounts his journey of more than 50 years with the classical music of India, including five continuous years spent in the country studying its classical music with his Guru, Devendra Murdeshwar. Lyon is joined by renowned tabla player Subhasis Mukherjee both in performance and in a discussion of the music’s deep structural and emotional content and its manifest possibilities for lively flights of imagination.
